What Schools Are Doing Is ISF

Adamson Middle School
In addition to Diversity week, we had flyers which were sent to our community members and posters that were placed around the school. One of our sixth grade students made two banners for the front lobby. She also made a Diversity Week dance and field day banners. We had balloons and streamers around the school to assist in spreading the word "Empowerment, Dedication and Unity Reaching Out to Our Community."  (see photos)

POP kids are making morning announcements before International Night and participating in the evening's activities. Our next activity is going to be Lunch 'n Learn's and I have a parent who wants to work with the students to put on a play about stamping out prejudice. I think it will be fun. (see photos)

Babb Middle's POP Cops
Babb Middle School had ten 6th and 7th graders attend the Power over Prejudice Summit in Atlanta this fall, along with the school counselors, Ms. Sellards and Ms. Rashad.  This was a wonderful conference that focused on helping students overcome prejudice and discrimination.  The students who attended this conference are now known as Babb Middle School’s “POP Cops”.

These students have worked hard to put activities in place to help promote an understanding among students from different cultures.  For instance they organized a “Mix It Up Day” during lunch where students were asked to sit with someone from a culture different from their own.  The students really seemed to enjoy this activity and learned a lot about students from different cultures.

The POP Cops have also been working on other activities, such as a “No Name Calling Week”.  This is an event that is held nationwide for one week each year.  For the 2005/2006 school year it will be held from January 23rd-January 27th.  The POP Cops kicked off “No Name Calling Week” by showing a short video about bullying on morning announcements.  They explained the purpose of “No Name Calling Week” and discussed the activities for the week.  We are currently in the middle of “No Name Calling” week and the POP Cops are doing an outstanding job of involving the student body in this effort.  One activity planned is to pass out “POP Cop” slips to students who act in a positive way to stand up against bullying.  The students’ names are put on the slip, which is then put in a box until the end of the week.  At the end of the week, a name will be drawn from the box and this student will receive a bag of treats in honor of their positive behavior.

The POP Cops also decided to incorporate an idea that was mentioned in the “No Name Calling” resource kit at our school.  They created Babb Middle School’s “Dear POP Cops” column where students can ask questions on how to handle difficult situations.  We have placed a box in the counseling office for these letters to be dropped off and the POP Cops will read the letters during morning announcements and will provide their expert advice on how to handle the situation.  They created a presentation to show over morning announcements to demonstrate how this column will work in our school.

The POP Cops are a very ambitious group of kids and we look forward to the many activities they will continue to come up with this school year.
